Important Update from RSA

RSA would like to give you an update on the RSA SecurID situation and some new developments. Art Coviello has issued an open letter to customers.

In the letter, Art outlines an expanded remediation program that includes the best practices first detailed in March, as well as additional offers you may consider in light of your overall security posture.

On June 6th, Art Coviello wrote to all RSA customers with an update on the changing threat landscape and to confirm that information taken from RSA in March had been used as an element of an attempted broader attack on Lockheed Martin, a major U.S. government defense contractor. Lockheed Martin also stated that the attack was thwarted and they continue to use RSA SecurID authentication as part of their layered approach to security.

To re-iterate what Art said in his letter:

  • The attack on Lockheed Martin does not reflect a new threat or vulnerability in RSA SecurID technology. RSA remain highly confident in the RSA SecurID product as the leading multi-factor authentication solution.
  • RSA also feel strongly that the specific remediation and best practices we have provide to partners and customers (posted on RSA Partner Central and SecurCare Online) will help to deliver the highest levels of customer protection.
  • RSA are expanding their security remediation program to include an offer to replace RSA SecurID hardware tokens for customers. The customers can call the RSA Remediation Support line to get more information on all remediation actions.
  • RSA started manufacturing new RSA SecurID hardware authenticators on March 23, 2011. All RSA SecurID hardware authenticators manufactured on or after that date were manufactured using new processes developed after the initial cyber attack. These new processes were developed in consultation with several third parties and include keeping certain key processes offline, "air-gapping" of the manufacturing environment, multiple layers of security, and greater security and control for end user interactions.
